Ever wondered?
Why do individuals engage in overeating or overspending?
What prompts some to resort to conflict or violence?
Why do people turn to drugs or consider taking their own lives?
Why do we want attention?
Essentially, there is always a rationale behind actions, even if not immediately apparent. People often act in ways that may seem irrational or perplexing, even to themselves. Amidst the myriad answers to the question, “Why do I do the things I do?” Tony Robbins identifies six primary driving forces known as the Six Human Needs.
These needs are universal, influencing every individual’s life regardless of their background—be it country of origin, socioeconomic status, race, religion, color, creed, or personal aspirations.

The Six Human Needs are:
- Certainty: Including comfort, security, safety, stability, and predictability.
- Significance: Encompassing pride, importance, achievement, and competition.
- Uncertainty/Variety: Involving instability, change, entertainment, and surprise.
- Love/Connection: Reflecting togetherness, passion, unity, warmth, and desire.
- Growth: Embodied by the quote, “You will either step forward into growth, or you will step backward into safety” by Abraham Maslow.
- Contribution: Captured in the quote, “Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life’s deepest joy: true fulfillment” by Tony Robbins.
The first four needs are essential for human survival, with love completing the needs of the personality. The last two, growth and contribution, are crucial for lasting fulfillment and represent the needs of the spirit. While everyone seeks to fulfill these needs, the approach may vary, and some needs may be satisfied at the expense of others. Identifying the driving force behind one’s behavior helps uncover opportunities for positive transformation.
Understanding the Six Human Needs is foundational to comprehending the deeper aspects of one’s identity. By delving into these needs, you gain insights into your actions and reactions, fostering a heightened awareness crucial for pivotal shifts in life.
